普段は捨てられた子供服などをリサイクルして作品を作っています。
今回、越前市に来て、紙漉きの工房で製作することができるので、古襖紙をリサイクルすることにしました。中央に川上御前、左右に紙の原料となる楮の木と根っこが貼り絵と縫い合わせの手法で描かれています。特に根っこはあえて作られたシワの表現です。
この作品の基盤となる材料(支持体)は古襖紙で、上から紙漉きの手法で紙が重ねられています。おそらくこの襖紙は大量生産でマシンで作られたもので、水をかけるとシワが寄ります。
タイトルである「The paper remembers its roots」は、同じく滞在制作をしているアーティストのElaineさんとの会話の中からインスピレーションを受けました。Elaineさんから、「紙は水を覚えている(一度作られた紙は伸びる(伸縮する)方向などがわかっているので)シワになる」と教えてもらい、印象に残ったのです。シワがまさに、「根(ルーツ)」古い歴史との繋がりを覚えているように、きれいごとだけではない「ルーツ」と生きる五箇の人々に敬意を込め、描いた作品です。
I typically make my work by recycling thrown-away children’s clothes and such. In Echizen City, I decided to recycle old fusuma paper. Kawakami Gozen is depicted in the center, with paper mulberry trees and roots—the raw materials for paper—on either side, rendered using a technique combining collage and stitching. The roots, in particular, feature deliberately created wrinkles. The base material for this work is old fusuma paper, layered with paper made using traditional paper-making techniques. This fusuma paper was likely mass-produced by machine and wrinkles when water is applied. The title, “The paper remembers its roots,” was inspired by a conversation with Elaine, another artist also creating work during this residency. Elaine told me, “Paper remembers water (it knows the direction it stretches or shrinks once made), so it wrinkles.” This left a strong impression. The wrinkles seem to remember the “roots”—the connection to ancient history. This piece was created with respect for the people of Goka who live with their roots, not just fine-sounding talk.
