Comment: That day, I helped my mother-in-law with the housework, my father-in-law watched the children, my mother-in-law and I talked about the family’s social withdrawal, and my mother-in-law and husband helped me with my embroidery. Light refreshments included. It felt like a casual little sightseeing tour. Is that really so bad? Some say you can’t just go in a tourist mindset. But my approach is like this.
The starting point was my relationship with my mother-in-law. She is partially paralyzed and needs assistance when walking. One day, I asked her to help with a simple part of my embroidery. Our conversation flowed, and I sensed her tension easing. Only then did I discover that she, like my grandmother(born in a rural area of Tokushima, Japan), possessed highly skilled sewing techniques. She too had been born in a rural region—Aomori in northern Japan. I realized that respecting someone’s skill, asking for help, and caring for one another are profoundly natural acts. These moments became openings through which invisible forms of perception emerged.
その日、私は義母の家事を手伝い、義父は子供たちを見守り、義母と私は家族の引きこもりについて話し、義母と夫は私の刺繍を手伝ってくれた。軽食も用意されていた。気軽な小旅行のような気分だった。それで本当に悪いことだろうか？観光気分で行くべきではないと言う人もいる。でも私のやり方はこうなんだ。
きっかけは、私の義母とのコミュニケーションだ。彼女は半身不随で、歩くときに誰かのケアを必要とする。私がケアするとき、義母はぎこちなく、申し訳なさそうだった。私はそのぎこちなさが身体が固まって檻の中にいるように感じた。ある日、刺繍の簡単な部分を手伝ってほしいと頼んだ。会話が弾むうちに、彼女の緊張がほぐれていくのを感じた。その時初めて、彼女も私の祖母（徳島生まれ）同様、高度な縫製技術を持っていることを知った。彼女もまた田舎——日本の北、青森——で生まれたのだ。人の技を尊重し、助けを求め、互いを気遣うことは、根源的に自然な行為だと気づいた。こうした瞬間が、目に見えない知覚の形が現れる入り口となった。
